Types of Plumbing Pipes for Pool Installation
Pool plumbing is a phrase that is used to describe the pipes, fittings, and valves that are responsible for bringing water to the pool. These pipes play a key role in carrying the water out of the pool for it to be filtered and return the treated water into the pool.
How Does the Pool Plumbing System Work?
Suction pipes are responsible for carrying the water out of the pool to be filtered while pressure pipes return this treated water to the pool. The valves in a pool system decide the direction in which the water flows to and from the pool and in and out of the equipment. In between the suction and return pipes, are placed pool pump, filter and water heater.
Common Types of Pipes for Pool Plumbing
Three main types of pipes can be used for pool plumbing:
- Rigid PVC pipe – if this pipe is used, it is recommended that it be a minimum of Schedule 40 – the standard for pool plumbing pipe. Any pipe, the diameter of which is 2″ can hold a pressure of 166 PSI. Schedule 80 pipe can also be used however, it is more expensive and is not common in pool plumbing. Sch 80 pipe has the same diameter as Sch 40, but because it’s thicker, it can handle a pressure of up to 243 PSI. Generally speaking, rigid PVC pipe is long-lasting and durable, making it the most preferred pipe for pool plumbing.
- Flex PVC pipe – is growing popular in new swimming pool installations, especially the energy-efficient swimming pools. It has the same diameter as rigid Sch 40 pipes. The benefits of the flexible PVC pipes are reduced labour, less cutting or measuring and reduced installation cost. However, it is more expensive compared to rigid pipe, tends to be more prone to crushing and puncturing, and can get damaged by UV rays causing it to weaken over time.
- Polyethene pipe, also known as the black poly pipe is a flexible black pressure pipe that is common in-ground pool plumbing. The pipe can lose its flexibility in cold weather and can be hard to work with.
Choosing the right pipe for installing an in-ground swimming pool will leave you worry free.
